Where There Is No Doctor

The project to translate the book "Where There Is No Doctor" by Dr Werner into Kiswahili and distribute to the rural areas in Tanzania was undertaken in 1978.

In Tanzania at the time there was an acute shortage of the medical doctors. Judging from the immense success the book had met with in other countries, the Club saw a tremendous need for such a book to reach out to the millions in the rural areas where there was no formal medical treatment available.

The Club decided initially to publish 10,000 copies.

The project was completed in 1979 at a cost of US Dollars 80,000 and officially launched on 19 December 1979 to the Hon Minister of Education, Mr N A Kuhanga, by the then President of the Club, PP Rtn B K Tanna.

The date of the hand over was most appropriate since that year was declared by the United Nations as "The International Year of the Child"

The book was much acclaimed by the H E the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, who was handed over a number of copies by the Club President in 21 December 1979. Mwalimu was so impressed at the content and the quality of the book promising to bring 'rays of hope and happiness in the homes of millions of needy people in Tanzania' that he ordered every Minister to make sure that the book was available in his Constituency.

The book was so popular that there were orders from neighbouring countries Zambia, Malawi and the Congo where Swahili is spoken, written or understood.

It all seemed worthwhile when we realized that through our efforts, we would be instrumental in wiping the tears of millions of children in areas where there is no doctor, or provide relief to an ailing mother from her source of suffering.
